Senior Fitter and Turner

About the job: 

The CSIR has a vacancy for Senior Fitter and Turner in Management Services portfolio. The incumbent for this position will be responsible to assemble/fabricate, install, maintain and test mechanical machinery and mechanisms, such as pumps pipework, valves, motors, boilers and hydraulic systems. The incumbent will also be responsible to carry out planned and breakdown maintenance and refurbishment/reconditioning of mechanical equipment, air compressors, pressure vessels, lifting equipment, fire systems, boiler plants and any other mechanical equipment. The position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

 Perform rigging from time to time and to operate truck mounted cranes and forklifts;

 Adhere to statutory compliance of all statutory equipment (pressure vessels, fire systems, lifting equipment etc);

 Carryout planned Mechanical maintenance and repairs to CSIR plant and equipment including pumps, hydraulic equipment, fire and lifting equipment;

 Maintenance and testing of statutory equipment (fire extinguishers, air compressors, boilers, pressure vessels and lifting equipment);

 Conduct complex repair, modification and carry out installation work on mechanical plant and equipment using technical equipment and hand tools in accordance with SANS standards and codes regulatory requirements;

 Diagnose faults on plant and equipment to determine the faults and carry out repairs required; 

 Conduct root cause analysis on mechanical malfunction or failure of operational equipment;

 Assist units with maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment and ensure compliance with statutory requirements;

 Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health Safety act and bylaws; and 

 Upload mechanical equipment information onto the Computerized Maintenance

Management System with up to date maintenance tasks.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

 N4 Certificate as well as Mechanical Trade Test Certificate with a minimum of six (6) years post trade experience;

 Extensive hands on experience in fabrication, machining welding and rigging;

 Well experienced in Environment, Health & Safety and statutory compliance in workshop environment;

 Sound knowledge of maintenance of mechanical equipment;

 Knowledge of Boilers, Cranes, Air compressors, Mechanical Lifting equipment and Fire systems;

 Knowledge of mechanical building services and maintenance thereof;

 Sound mechanical and maintenance skills; 

 Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and to carry out fabrications from drawings
