OPERATION : DE BEERS CONSOLIDATED MINES (PTY) LTD - VENETIA MINE

PURPOSE AND ROLE IN THE BUSINESS

The Senior Environmental Officer is required to oversee the implementation of the Environmental 

Management System across the Company’s value chain to meet compliance obligations and improve the 

Company’s environmental performance

KEY RESULT AREAS

• Collaborate with section heads and supervisors to manage sectional environmental risks, aspects and impacts with consideration for the mine’s significant risks, opportunities and compliance obligations.

• Review compliance requirements of the mine and plan for action with required stakeholders. Forecast trends for future planning/ resource requirements and produce reports to HODs in line with the above.

• Facilitate the collection of legal and group monitoring data to track performance in line with the mine’s reporting requirements. Propose areas for improvement based on analysis and evaluation of trends. 

Produce performance reports for internal (business) and external stakeholders (regulators).

• Initiate and manage procurement processes (scope of works etc.) for compliance and operational 

requirements.

• Update and oversee the management of environmental tools (i.e. IsoMetrix. Net, Enablon and internal 

Document Management System (DMS)), plans and procedures and provide feedback toward system improvements.

• Facilitate operational assurance processes and incident investigations, including reportable incidents. 

Propose recommendations/improvement opportunities to reduce risks.

• Facilitate the identification and assessment of legal requirements associated with any operational change on mine as part of the environmental change management process. Roll upward for action.

KEY INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

OPCO, All Section Managers, Section Supervisors, Commercial Department, Environmental Manager, Environmental Superintendents, Senior Environmental Officers – Operations, Environmental Monitors.

KEY EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Auditors and specialists, National and Provincial Government stakeholders, Traditional authorities, Local Municipalities and Interested and Affected Parties as required. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: (Education & Experience)

• Grade 12 certificate.

• Bachelors /B-Tech degree in an Environmental discipline (an Honours degree will be an advantage).

• ISO14001certificate and implementation experience.

• 2-3 years’ Experience in Environmental management in a mining environment.

• Understanding of environmental legislation.

• Contractor management experience.

• Ability to plan and execute a budget.

• Valid EB/Code 8 driver’s license.

• Successfully obtain a Medical Fitness certificate on mine.

• MS Office knowledge is essential.

• Effectively influence and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to achieve required outcomes.

• Analytical skills, is capable of data and trend evaluation and analysis.

• Effective communication in business language (English) and other official languages across boundaries at appropriate levels and has sound written and verbal communication skills.

• Facilitation, report-writing and presentation skills.
