Venetia Mine is South Africa’s most valuable diamond mine. As we develop the mine underground, it is also one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. Venetia Underground Project (VUP) is a complexed underground mechanised development, shaft and mine construction project to deliver an operational Sub Level Cave mine operation. 

Experienced and effective management and control of the project works and mining operations through major contractors (EPC, Mining Contractor) and owner functions is essential for Safe, timely and effective delivery of the project.

Job Description 

The Banksman is responsible to co-ordinate, control, and supervise all operators of shaft conveyances, skips, material, equipment, associated systems and shift staff being raised or lowered safely underground. The role is responsible to maintain the proper observation of the requirements of the regulations, procedures and instructions issued in the interests of safety and health pertaining to shaft operations.

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

• Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation and health, safety, environmental and security policies and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion.

• Completes pre-start and daily maintenance checks on equipment and safety devices before commencing work. 

• Maintains equipment and accessories to required standards and reports and replaces sub-standard components.

• Ensures compliance to shaft operating procedures and equipment by adhering to, and following specific code of practices and engineering standards 

• Reception and delivery of employees / equipment / material to the underground operation

• Effective risk management and compliance with legislative and organisational requirements 

• Transmit and exchange the correct signals

This role is in the Mining Department at a CL Level and reporting to the Senior Foreman Logistics.

Qualifications

Education required:

• Grade 12 / N3 / Equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification

• DMRE Onsetter / Banksman Certificate

• Blasting Certificate for Underground Hard Rock/Equivalent qualification

• Required classification as per VTS testing for specific role Orange

• Valid EB/Code 8 Drivers License

Experience & knowledge required:

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an operational shaft of which 2 years must have been as an Onsetter or Banksman

• Knowledge and understanding of shaft operational practices and Safety, Health and Environmental Legislation and standards applicable to workings of a shaft.

• Ability to plan, coordinate and allocate work to ensure adherence to shaft schedules

Other requirements:

• Be prepared to work shifts, do standby duties, call-outs, and work overtime as per what the role may require

• Must have strong administrative and organisational skills

• Ability to work under pressure, be independent and a self-starter

• Medical Certificate of Fitness to work underground. Medical assessment will include vertigo and claustrophobia amongst others. Able to tolerate physical exertion

• The post is dependent on the successful completion of the Company’s pre-employment protocol such as qualifications verification, relevant psychometric and technical assessments and security clearance
