Who is the programme for?

This Level 3 Apprenticeship is for students taking steps into the world of Marine Engineering. 

Apprenticeships are a great way of earning and learning at the same time. This apprenticeship has two elements for learning a Technical element and an NVQ element. 

What does the programme include?

This programme is delivered in two parts. These units have been chosen to meet the needs of employers. 

Thefirst part instils a broad base of practical and academic knowledge of Marine Engineering. This is taught to students in five core units which include; A Boat Building Project, Mathematics, Mechanical Principles,Electrical/Electronic Principles, Health & Safety and Communications.

Students will be taught an additional four units which include Computer Aided Design (CAD), Business, Welding and Electrical Installation.

Practical elements will include Boatbuilding, Engine Maintenance, Joinery & Carpentry, Rigging and GRP/Composites Engineering.

To make this course meaningful, we are also keen that all apprentices experience boating and sailing. 

What attendance is required?

This Apprenticeship takes two years to complete. Apprentices will need to attend College on a day release(Two day per week) basis over the course of the Apprenticeship.

Learning and assessment

You will be assessed throughout the two-year programme by way of assessments, projects and assignments.

What qualifications will be achieved?

You will achieve a BTEC Level 3 120 Credit Diploma in Engineering, a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Marine Engineering, Functional Skills (if applicable) in Literacy, Mathematics and ICT and also training on Employers Rights and Responsibilities. Upon completion of all of these elements you will receive the Apprenticeship Framework Certificate.

What is required to join the programme?

You will need 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C including Maths and English, or relevant experience.

What can be achieved after the programme?

Upon completion of the Apprenticeship you will have the option to progress to Higher Education or into employment.

Costs and payment

2015/16 Fees: Students aged 16-18: Fully Funded - no fees are payable. Students aged 19+: Co funded with the employer and there will an employer fee of £995 plus the relevant exam and registration fee.
